Our party is at a critical juncture, facing challenges and dynamics that are unique in our history and that will determine our future. I am running for re-election because I believe we need the DNC to include leaders who have experience delivering electoral victories while implementing progressive values and building diverse coalitions.
While the Democratic Party has made some progress in these areas, I remain concerned that the current approach is not enough to produce the across-the-board victories we will need in the coming years.
Historically, a key job of the Democratic National Committee was to ensure that Democrats in state and local parties get the support, resources, and engagement they need to grow the base and win elections. As a DNC member, I would like to return to focusing on how we maximize wins in state and local elections so that we can protect the rights of people everywhere and restore with integrity the principle of self-governance.
All my career, I have been pushing the boundaries of what people thought was possible. As the first LGBTQ+ Speaker of the California Assembly, I was proud to work to ensure that California led the way on immigrant rights, climate change, income equality, and increased support for California’s students. Equally important, in the midterm election that took place under my leadership, California Democrats actually flipped a Republican seat while other states were sinking under a red wave. I believe my record on both policy and politics can provide a valuable perspective as the DNC adapts for the future.
If the last four years have shown us anything, it is that we have to keep rethinking what is possible in our politics. Harboring old grudges won’t win new majorities. Relying on conventional wisdom won’t help us face hard truths.
